Darcy Newborn Photos

Baby Darcy's Birth Story

We have been so excited waiting for our new sister to get here.  We talk to her, in mommy's belly, all the time, bring her toys, kiss her, and tell mommy how cute she is.  We went to every one of her doctor appointments, (except the long anatomy scan ultrasound).  We are sure excited she is here.

Nolan woke up at 3:00 am Wednesday morning to go potty, as I got up to go help him, my water broke.  Sam woke up and I sent him to help Nolan, he wanted me to help him so I went and stood in the bathtub and helped as best as I could and got him back to bed.  Sam called his mom who came down and sat with the boys while they were asleep and we headed to the hospital.

As we drove I felt the first contractions I've ever really had, and I only knew they were contractions because my belly got really hard, but they were not painful... We got checked into the hospital and the nurse told me that the doctor on call had said that if my labor was not progressing by 6:00 am that I would need to be started on Pitocin.  When I explained my previous labor history to her, we knew this would be the direction our day would be going.  My doctor checked in at about 8:15 to see how we were and let us know he was at the hospital.

I got the epidural and it didn't seem to be helping everyone kept telling me to push my little button, I had been but nothing changed.  The anesthesiologist came in and gave me an non-diluted dose and for an hour I was completely unable to move my legs.  It was the most claustrophobic feeling.  I wasn't progressing very well all day and the baby was still very high and that kept the attending nurse and my doctor a little concerned, I was stuck at a 6 but baby wasn't moving.  Once the non-diluted epidural wore off and I was in pain again, they sent her back in.  I asked her not to dose me like that again.  I would rather feel the pain than not be able to move my legs.  She felt bad about the pain I was in and we decided on a half dose of the non-diluted stuff, which numbed my legs but I was still able to feel everything in my belly.

The nurses kept helping me move from side to side to help the baby move down into position.  I suddenly felt sick, like I was going to die.  I called the nurse and told her I was dying she said "I bet you are going to have a baby."  She called the doctor and had me start pushing.  Once the baby was ready, they called the doctor in.  My mom got to the hospital right as the doctor was ready to go and waited outside my room.

As I started pushing the baby was moving great.  Until she got to her shoulders.  Her shoulders were stuck.  All of a sudden I looked up and there were several new nurses in the room, who I hadn't seen before, all holding my legs and telling me to push.  (From my mom's view, outside the room, a light turned on outside the door and nurses from all over started running in, leaving my mom in a panic outside until someone told her what was happening). The main nurse, who I'd seen all day, came to my side and pushed on the side of my belly trying to get the baby's shoulders to squish in and fit through.  At one point the doctor stopped, it was like a movie, he shouted "someone get me a heartbeat on that baby" and everyone in the room stopped moving and was silent as a nurse moved the monitor around until we could finally hear the baby's heartbeat again.  Finally, one shoulder was through, but then the other one got stuck as well, so we all kept fighting to get her out.  Her chest was very slow moving and pretty stuck as well, but finally, she came out.

They put her grey little body on mine as they wiped her off then rushed her to the little baby table to do whatever it is they do to newborns.  She wasn't crying and I kept looking over at Sam and reminding him of this (flashbacks to Nolan's birth) while he assured me that she was fine, that he could see her breathing.  I heard a few little screams, but not enough to comfort me, after a few minutes, she finally cried and I could breathe again.

All of the nurses who could see her were taking bets on her weight, at first I heard people say they thought she'd be pushing 9 pounds, then they said 10... finally they put her on the scale... 10 pounds 12 ounces.  Everyone was shocked and I became super awesome.

The doctor finished up, they brought me my baby, and my mom came in to see her before heading up to relieve Sam's mom of the maniacs.

As they wheeled me up to the post-postpartum room another nurse helped pull the bed onto the elevator, looked over and said "is this the ten pound baby?"... word travels fast.

As they got us settled in our new room, Sam's mom came in to see the baby and shortly after, my mom brought the boys in.  They came in and were SO excited.  They knew exactly who this baby was and they told everyone how cute she was.  They "pet" her head and kissed and her and said hi to me and asked about the doctor taking her out of my tummy.  They were the sweetest things.  Everyone in the room melted.

Sam brought the boys home and my mom stayed with me for a couple hours before heading back to the house to get some sleep as well.  It was nice not having to worry about the nurses waking anyone else up when they came in during the night and it was kind of nice to spend that first night, just Darcy and mama.

The next morning, when my doctor came in to check in, he was telling me how "fun" Darcy's delivery was.  He told me about how she had gotten stuck, and this maneuver he had to use "the woodscrew" (or something) to get her through... all I could think was "this man really loves his job."  I asked if I could go home that day and he said he'd make it happen.  Sam came back to the hospital and we waited for all of the discharge stuff to be done so we could take our sweet girl home to her brothers... I'm not going to lie, I was really having a hard time being away from them so long as well.  We were finally discharged at about 5:00 pm and grabbed In 'n Out on our way home.

The boys were so happy when their sister came home.  They have loved every second of her.  Not once have the resented her or been mean or anything.  They adore her.  (I'm sure the day will come when that changes, but for now We've enjoyed this month with the three of them).

Going home!

Holding "bister" for the first time.

"Little Sister" the only newborn sized onsie she ever wore.

March

We finally got some snow!

Nothing wrong with a little wrestling in the snow.

Chased each other all over the yard.

 Throwing snow balls.

Mackay thought he was so funny to put his face in the snow on the ground and look up with snow stuck to his face.

Nolan tried to stick his face in the snow but wasn't brave enough to get more than his hat in.
